Columbia Advanced Chiropractic, LLC

The field of chiropractic began back in 1895. The word ‘Chiropractic’ is derived from Greek terminology and means ‘to treat by hand.’ Chiropractic care focuses on conservative, non-invasive treatment for joint and soft tissue problems and their associated effects on the neurological system. Neurological ‘irritation’ caused by such problems can lead to anything from pain and dysfunction to headaches to organ problems. Joint and soft tissue problems, if left untreated, can ultimately lead to degenerative changes. The main job of the chiropractor is to identify the cause of the problem, address it properly, and educate the patient so as to reduce the need for continued care.

The field of chiropractic has evolved much over the last 123 years and this is a great thing! Chiropractic care, if properly applied, incorporates the best of treatments for joint, muscle, fascia, and ligament dysfunction to help you get better as quickly as possible. More educated chiropractors implement rehabilitative protocols to help patients ‘hold’ their treatments for longer periods of time. Please feel free to browse through this website to see what chiropractic care can do to help you. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.

Chiropractic care is a hands-on therapy geared toward restoring proper joint mechanics/biomechanics and reducing pain. Some chiropractors offer rehabilitation and stabilization exercises to help educate the patient. The integration of chiropractic care and proper rehabilitation and spinal stabilization gives the patient optimal care.

Although manipulation has been used for thousands of years in many different cultures, modern Chiropractic care was developed in 1895 by D.D. Palmer. Originally a ‘magnetic healer’, the story goes that D.D. patted a friend of his on the back with a book and the gentleman’s hearing was restored. Due to the strange positive response from his action, D.D. began evaluating the spine and its effects on the body through the neurological system.

Chiropractic care has evolved over the years as a better understanding of the body develops. Chiropractic studies are conducted around the world and research is ongoing. Such research studies cover topics from the positive effects of manipulation for otitis media (ear infections) in children to the positive effects of manipulation for lumbar disc herniations.

Chiropractic care offers a safe and effective treatment option for a multitude of conditions. Being less invasive and without the side effects of drug therapy, cortisone injections, and surgery, many times chiropractic care is the best place to start to reduce your pain and restore proper body function. Come see how Drs. Manison and Hickey can help you achieve optimal health through a broad array of chiropractic and rehabilitative approaches.

Our bodies are made up of bones, joints, muscles, ligaments, tendons, nerves, blood vessels, fascia, etc… When joints are functioning properly, the muscles and ligaments work properly. When the joints are dysfunctional, or not working properly, this leads to improper muscle, ligament, and/or nerve function. The result can be any or all of the following: pain, burning, tingling, numbing, swelling, and sensitivity, as well as ‘autonomic concomitants,’ or conditions that you cannot control that respond to pain and dysfunction, such as heart rate changes, breathing issues, and other internal ‘stress’ responses.

The main causes of joint dysfunction are mechanical, chemical, and mental. Mechanical causes are referred to as micro or macro trauma. Micro trauma is also known as repetitive stress (use) injury. Sitting with poor posture at a desk and typing all day long can cause problems such as carpal tunnel or neck, upper back, or low back pain. Macro trauma refers to pain due to trauma to the body, such as a fall, a break, or a car crash. Both forms of mechanical causes of joint dysfunction can benefit immensely from chiropractic care. Another cause of joint dysfunction is due to the chemical effects on the joint function and the body as a whole. Smoking, heavy drinking, and poor diet can create chemical imbalances in the body. When dealing with our health, it’s important to work on being fit.  A reduction in excessive body fat along with an increase in muscle weight is important to enhance overall health and function.  To achieve this result, we utilize the Isagenix system as its results are unmatched and the science is very strong.  If you wish to see lots of studies on the topics of caloric restriction, intermittent fasting, proteins, and more, follow us on Instagram at ‘@drmanison’.  There you can see all the studies Dr. Manison puts up on this topic and on other health related issues.  We have incredible success stories, including Dr. Manison’s story about his diabetic condition through this system. Please also read our blogs as many cover some of this material.

When discussing the mental causes of joint dysfunction, it is important to remember that the mind-body connection is very powerful. The brain has a large influence on chemical and hormone secretion. Being ‘stressed out’ can lead to chemical imbalances that will have a negative effect on the overall health of your body.  This is important to address whether you are a patient with chronic pain or an athlete in pain trying to get back to full form.

The job of the chiropractor is to assess and treat the mechanical, chemical, and mental cause(s) of joint/soft tissue dysfunction to correct your problem and help to rehabilitate you so that the condition does not return. Chiropractic care should be personalized. It is important that the chiropractor establish an individualized plan so that you receive the proper care for any and all of your neuromusculoskeletal needs. It is imperative that your chiropractor have substantial training above and beyond the basics of your condition. Sometimes a referral is needed for x-rays, MRIs, and/or other forms of medical intervention. It is important that your chiropractor spend enough time with you so that he or she can identify if and when this is necessary.

Choosing a chiropractor can sometimes be more difficult than choosing other forms of medical practitioners as chiropractors can have different training and tend to utilize different techniques. Columbia Advanced Chiropractic, LLC is set up to offer high quality, individualized care.  Dr. Manison believes in treatment that is geared toward correcting a problem, not just treating it. Each treatment plan is geared for the particular patient and condition and is not ‘cookie cutter’…or one plan that is the same for all patients.  The goal should be to help the patient in as few treatments as possible, not extend a care plan that ends up with excessive treatments. Although supportive care over time may be necessary, the doctors believe in educating the patient in order to make him or her more self-reliant so that continual care is not necessary.

Dr. Manison has specialized training for the treatment and rehabilitation of all types of extremity and sports injuries. Beyond training, Dr. Manison also has the experience in the ‘field’ and in the office with the assessment and treatment of such conditions. He prides himself on offering the highest level of care so that the patients will achieve the best results.  He believes that patients benefit most when a doctor continually works to obtain the highest level training available.  There are no aides performing any of the work on the patients as Dr. Manison works with each patient in all phases of care. He believes that each patient should be treated like family and not like a number.

Being chiropractors tend to be holistic with their approach, many offer ‘supplements’ to aid add types of issues.  Dr. Manison has a slightly different approach as he prefers to modify lifestyle vs. just adding supplements to poor dietary patterns.  Dr. Manison works with patients in regards to Caloric Restriction and Intermittent Fasting in order to aid the patient with body composition change.  Body composition change refers to gaining muscle while losing fat weight.  By use of the FDA approved InBody 570 body composition machine, Dr. Manison can monitor patient progress with the system he implements.  The results are nothing less that amazing!  This is not a diet plan, it’s a lifestyle.  It’s fun and it’s easy!
